Worthy of the gospel of Christ
“Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.” (Phil. 1:27)
Paul directly tells the Philippians to conduct themselves worthy of the gospel of Christ. Paul sees this as being firm in one spirit, with one mind and striving together for the faith of the gospel, not alarmed by their enemies. It is easy to imagine what a life unworthy of the gospel is. The gospel is more than just a message of salvation. It requires those who believe it to live worthy of it. Again, as the gospel is the news of Jesus's love in going to the cross in our place — then we should be of His same mind. (Phil. 2:5) Such attitudes would keep us from getting carried away by petty differences among the body. (Phil. 2:27)
The gospel is something for which we must struggle if we want to see it progress. If we are active in witnessing, there will be opposition. It isn’t a free ride. We have been promised to share in Christ’s struggles and sufferings. It is the gospel which causes this.
