Humility of Mind
Philippians chapter 2, verse 3 tells us to have “with humility of mind, regard one another as more important than yourselves.”
This humility is not inaction only, but it is a quality of mind. Prior to this, it says to do nothing from selfishness or conceit. The one you are thinking only or primarily about yourself. The other is just the opposite - you regard everyone as more important than yourself.
It is not that someone is better at something and that he should deny that he is, but that no matter who he is or what he does, he does not consider this the most important thing.
To think of others first is the key - your own interests last. This is so easily said and so difficult to practice. The key is to imitate Christ, who is the epitome of humility.
This is the extent of Christ's humility.
He was God - We are just people.
He did not insist on His rights as God - We continually demand our rights.
He emptied Himself - We puff ourselves up.
Form of a servant - We all want to be leaders.
Humbled further to the point of death, even on the cross - Life is of all things most precious to us.
As a result of Christ’s obedience, He has been highly exalted, the name above every name, all knees will bow, every tongue, confess Him as Lord to the glory of God.
We can do all the things as Christ; this is the road to greater joy. To rejoice as it tells us elsewhere would only be possible if we have ourselves in the right perspective.
If some horrible thing happens to us, we would be so caught up in ourselves that to rejoice will be next to impossible. However, if we were thinking of God and His sacrifice, no joy would be impossible.
