Jesus’ prayer for us

“But now I come to You; and these things I speak in the world so that they may have My joy made full in themselves. I have given them Your word; and the world has hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. Sanctify them in the truth; Your word is truth. As You sent Me into the world, I also have sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they themselves also may be sanctified in truth.

I do not ask on behalf of these alone, but for those also who believe in Me through their word; that they may all be one; even as You, Father, are in Me and I in You, that they also may be in Us, so that the world may believe that You sent Me.” (John 17:13-21)

Jesus’s prayer for us is that we might have His joy full in us. That joy is entirely possible despite the fact that the world hates us. Their hate is due to the fact that we are not like them.

Jesus prays that we be kept from the evil one even though we are living in his territory.

We are otherworldly – or at least not of this world because we have become Children of God.

Jesus prays that we be sanctified in truth – then He says that God’s Word is truth. The road to being set apart is through the Word.

Jesus has sent us into the world in the same ways He was sent.

He prays again that we be sanctified in truth, which is why He sanctified Himself. There is no road to sanctification except through Him.

Again, He prays not only for the disciples but all those who believe because of their word – i.e. us.

He prays that we may be One – that we would be in them. The results would be knowledge in the world that God sent Jesus.

Jesus prays for our joy.

Jesus prays for our sanctification.

Jesus prays that we be One.
